Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (1975)
Directors: Volker Schlöndorff, Margarethe von Trotta
Actors: Angela Winkler
Runtime: 106 min
After spending a night with a young man whom she met at a party the previous evening, the police breaks in looking for the boy, and arrests her instead. Although the police initially claim that this young man is a notorious terrorist and bank robber, it turns out that he is actually an anti-militarist and a conscientious objector who deserted and stole money for some military officers’ salaries. However, the focus of the film are the links between the police and the media, in which they exchange confidential information, and shows that the media often operate by distorting or completely fabricating news stories. A very good depiction of a media lynching and the terror which the bourgeois media have over unprotected individuals, as well as the role which the media, one of the most important state ideological apparatuses, have in the preservation of the system.
