The story takes place in plague-ridden England in the mid-fourteenth century. A young monk joins and guides a group of Christian knights who have the task of investigating rumors of a remote village in the swamp surrounded by a large forest which has been spared by the Black Death, allegedly because they renounced God and turned to witchcraft.
