Swept Away (2002)
Director: Guy Ritchie
Actors: Madonna, Adriano Giannini
Runtime: 89 min
Due to a hassle during a cruise in the Mediterranean, a poor sailor and an incredibly arrogant, constantly pissed off rich woman end up on a deserted island. Usual social roles of master and subordinate are suddenly reversed, and the story develops in an interesting direction. After I saw the movie and went online for more information, to my surprise, I found that the movie received incredibly acerbic and negative reviews, which were mainly a mixture of hypocritical political correctness and ad hominem attacks on the actress/director couple. In fact, this interesting and multi-layered story, definitely worth seeing, raises questions about various forms of domination and shows how class relations shape the society, love and relationships.
